San Mateo Eichler Homes

San Mateo offers two Eichler neighborhoods; The largest, San Mateo Highlands, is located in the hills of southwest San Mateo and Eichler homes are found on Lexington Avenue, Yorktown Road, and Bunker Hill Drive as well as the smaller roads and cul-de-sacs branching off these main roads. In the second tract, 19th Avenue Park, Eichlers are in a compact neighborhood bound by S. Delaware Street, Concar Drive, and S. Grant Street in the heart of San Mateo.

Joseph Eichler developed Nineteenth Avenue Park, a tract of more than 200 Eichlers, in the mid-1950s and the residences here are fairly small homes on small lots. San Mateo Highlands, with 650 Eichlers, was built over a larger span of time, from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. The Highlands Eichler homes tend to be larger, featuring a variety of floor plans that include several original 2-story Eichlers.

As a note of interest: One of the two steel frame homes that Eichler built is located in San Mateo Highlands. The X-100, designed by Jones & Emmons, was intended as an exhibition house to attract buyers to the Highlands.
